Ana Martin-Villalba

German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)

Ana Martin-Villalba is an internationally leading expert in stem cell biology, brain regeneration, and neuro-oncology, with over two decades of research experience. She is Professor at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, where she leads a multidisciplinary team investigating cancer, aging, and regenerative therapies.
Ana has pioneered transformative single-cell technologies (Llorens-Bobadilla et al., Cell Stem Cell, 2015; Kremer et al., Nature 2024; Kremer et al., Nature-Methods, 2024), and the use of adeno-associated virus (AAV) technologies for targeting adult neural stem cells (Kremer et al., Molecular Therapy Methods & Clinical Development). Her lab has addressed the role of stem cell quiescence, interferons and Wnt activity in the aging Brain. Her earlier work on CD95 signaling laid the foundation for clinical strategies in neurodegeneration and cancer.
Ana is a member of EMBO and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and a recipient of major honors including ERC Consolidator and Synergy Grants and the Paul Ehrlich Young Investigator Award. Ana is co-founder of primAAVera therapeutics Gmbh.
