Dr. Alejandro Aguayo Orozco is a Senior Scientific Director in Diabetes Insights at Novo Nordisk, where he drives mechanism of action discovery and characterization and target identification for cardiometabolic diseases using human data, and has served as Executive Scientific Advisor to Lotte Bjerre Knudsen, previous Chief Scientific Advisor for R&D. Over the past years, Dr. Aguayo Orozco has led the systematic characterization of GLP-1 mode of action using human clinical trial data, generating mechanistic evidence on the metabolic, cardiovascular, and longevity effects of semaglutide that has directly informed drug discovery and development across Novo Nordisk's pipeline. Originally trained in Biotechnology, he also holds an MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a PhD in Bioinformatics and Biostatistics from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. His scientific career has spanned wet lab research in nanotechnology and biopharmaceuticals, through over a decade as researcher and assistant professor at the University of Copenhagen, leading work in Translational Disease Systems Biology and co-driving large-scale international consortia including EU-ToxRisk and Riskhunt3r. Dr. Aguayo Orozco also holds expertise in AI applied to drug discovery, combined with the biological fluency to translate computational insights into mechanistic understanding — an approach exemplified by his work on developing a new framework for accelerated drug discovery and project progression using applied AI, in collaboration with Anthropic.
